Depression hits hard and is often undiagnosed and unseen until too late. It led directly to my brother's death. He suffered from depression and it made it very difficult for him to hold down a job or stay in one place.

I am also familiar with suicide. My closest friend from childhood committed suicide years ago. And I have had my own personal battles with it in the past. Thoughts of suicide are practically an every day event for teens, and often for adults who can't cope with daily stress. Something must be done!

Karen, one of my good friends, shared with me the story of her husband's life...and his death. I was so saddened by what she told me. It brought such strong feelings within me. Most of all, I felt that her husband loved her deeply, but was just a lost soul who couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel. Those who choose to die can never see the light.

Karen wrote me recently about an event she is participating in, one that I have supported financially and one that I hope you'll consider supporting too. Here is her message, which she has asked me to post here.

Just over two years ago my husband died as a result of suicide after a life-long battle with depression. The last two months of his life were extremely hard for him, the pain of depression hurt throughout his entire body, and medications that he was given usually made the depression worsen or had side effects that were too difficult for him and one day he threw them all away. A few days later he was gone and my life, and all who loved him, have not been the same. So many times he would tell me that assisted suicide should be legal and that one day it will be, that I could mark his words.

I met Cheryl Kaye Tardif online and began a friendship with her after reading her latest novel, “Whale Song”. I wrote to tell her how much I enjoyed the book and that I could identify with each of the characters on almost every level and how touched I was by the story. This is a book that you should read, especially those that have lost someone that they love, no matter what type of loss. To me the book was haunting, spiritual, loving, insightful...I could go on and on.

On October 11th I will be taking part in the AFSP (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention) Out of the Darkness Walk in Portland, Oregon. AFSP is a non-profit group that brings awareness to suicide, depression, and mental illness as well as offer support to those who have survived the loss of someone to suicide and those contemplating suicide. It is a wonderful organization that I have been involved in since my husband died. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, go to my donation page at http://tinyurl.com/677qnp.

Cheryl has graciously offered a signed and personalized copy of two of her novels, “Whale Song” and “Divine Intervention”, to the first person to donate $100 to the walk in my name. Although the walk is on October 11th, you can continue to donate until December 31, 2008. Thank you Cheryl, you’re an incredible person and incredible author!

I will definitely be very happy to give away those 2 books.

Just think: be the first to donate $100 and you'll get 2 books valued at $36. And your money is going to a very worthy cause. I will also give the recipient some bookmarks and a personalized bookplate for each book.

Please consider donating any amount. Suicide should never happen and with your help, people's lives CAN be saved.

A week ago, I was contacted by author Rick Mofina, who asked me if I'd consider reviewing his newest thriller SIX SECONDS.

I was then contacted by MIRA, a division of Harlequin, and arrangements were made for me to receive an ARC--advanced reading copy. I take this as an honor. Publishers don't like to give ARCs to just anyone.

The ARC arrived 2 days after I said yes. I can't say much about Rick's book yet--other than it is a fast-paced thriller. I'm 2/3 done, so by next Sunday you'll get to read all about it.

I've only read one other Mofina novel so far--Every Fear. You can read my review of it HERE.

If you've already read my novels--Whale Song (Kunati), The River and Divine Intervention--and are looking for something new, please know that my latest novel Children of the Fog is being read by publishers now. I hope to make an announcement in a few months (or less).

For now, while you wait, I invite you to check out Remote Control. This is a novelette (about 10,000 words) based on a short story I wrote back in 1987. It has always been one of my favorites.

First, meet Harold Fielding--plumber by part of the day, slacker/tv addict the rest of the day and night. Harry believes that fame and fortune will come to him if he wishes hard enough. God forbid if he should actually work for it.

Beatrice Fielding is Harry's hardworking wife. She holds down multiple jobs so her husband can laze about on his recliner, eating popcorn and drinking cola while watching his favorite shows. She has many wishes--some aren't so nice.

In this dark, suspenseful and somewhat comical look at one man's desires, Remote Control delivers a strong message:

Be careful what you wish for!

I am serializing this novelette, adding one scene each week. I hope you enjoy. If so, please leave me a comment.

Read Remote Control.

Mystery/Suspense/Crime - for teens 14+ and for adults--men and women.

This novel is for anyone who is a fan of TV shows like CSI, Medium or Ghost Whisperer. If you know someone who enjoys these shows, give them a copy of Divine Intervention, a paranormal suspense about a group of psychic government agents searching for a serial arsonist in BC.

A mix of crime novel, paranormal suspense and thriller, Divine Intervention is also enjoyed by fans of authors such as J.D. Robb, Kay Hooper and Iris Johansen.

Mystery/Suspense/Thriller - for older teens 14+ and for adults--men and women.

The River appeals especially to male readers who enjoy conspiracy thrillers with a lot of action. Think high octane 'Mission Impossible' style thriller, exploring stem cell research, the fountain of youth and a deadly conspiracy that threatens mankind. Women enjoy The River too.

Del Hawthorne heads up north to the Nahanni River in search of her father who was presumed dead seven years earlier. Over the last decade, in an area know as the "Bermuda Triangle of Canada", many people have gone missing , bodies have washed up on the shore and headless corpses have been discovered. But what Del uncovers is something unbelievable...and very frightening. How far do we go until we've become God?

Recently compared to works by James Patterson, Michael Crichton and Dean Koontz, The River is a terrifying ride that you won't soon forget.

General Fiction - for children, young adults and adults, 8-108 years old.

Give them the gift of a novel with heart and soul. Whale Song is a beautiful novel that explores what it's like to be a pre-teen and teen whose life is uprooted and then tragically altered by a single decision. Whale Song explores issues of racism, bullying, death, mystical native legends, hope and forgiveness.

Originally marketed for adult women, this novel has found a strong following among YA readers, boys and girls. It's also a perfect gift to give a reluctant reader since I welcome emails from young readers and have found this particularly helpful in encouraging readers. Give them Whale Song this Christmas, plus an invitation to email me. I'll answer them personally.

Also for adults, and especially popular with book clubs and reading groups.

Whale Song will take you back and make you remember what it was like to be young again. It will grip at your heartstrings as you follow Sarah's troubled journey from child to adult. Great for fans of Jodi Picoult, Sue Monk Kidd and Alice Sebold.

*A portion of my royalties from Whale Song goes to 3 nonprofit organizations to help combat homelessness, poverty and addictions.

I love leaving behind a novel for someone, and I've found my favorite RAK place at the new Starbucks at 39th Ave and 17th St in Edmonton, AB.

I go there often to write. I sit in the far corner with my laptop.

It was after my trip to Mexico last February that I realized how much fun it can be to leave a book for someone. So I started occasionally leaving a book on the table by the cream/lid/stir stick display table at Starbucks.

I have left a copy of each of my books, each on a different day over a period of a couple of months. Sometimes I put it on the table as soon as I get there to write. Sometimes I have left a copy right before I leave.

I started off writing a note inside the cover that explained to the finder that it was a gift--to take it and read it. Every now and then I'd look up from what I was writing and check the table. Darn! The book's still there! I'd go back to work.

I found that the novel was sometimes there over night and that people were too timid to open the book, so they missed reading my message.

Recently, I tried a new tactic. I put a copy (I think of Divine Intervention) on the table, with a post-it note right on the cover. Throughout the day, I glanced at the table. Sometimes I held my breath when I saw someone standing nearby.

Ironically, I have NEVER actually seen the people who have accepted my gifts. Never seen them, and never heard from them--until a few days ago...

Moe gave me permission to post this email online:

Hi Cheryl,

I walked into a Starbucks one day and as I was stirring my tall dark roast I noticed a novel sitting on the table next to me with a note on it. I read the note and you know what it said. I was with my brother and we were both moved by it. Needless to say I took the book home with me. I have read about half of it now and am enjoying it very much. I would like to thank you for your kindness and would like to know where I could get a copy of Whale Song and any other works that you have published. Again thank you for your generosity and I will pass the word along that you tell a great yarn.

sincerely Moe

I have to say that receiving this email made me smile. (Thanks, Moe! You made my day!) Although the idea behind Random Acts of Kindness is to give, not receive, I have to admit that it is really nice to know that the person who accepted my gift actually enjoyed it. It also felt great to know that the right person had found my novel.

Now that's what you call...Divine Intervention!

~Cheryl Kaye Tardif,
author of Divine Intervention, Whale Song and The River
